ADA Reach Ranges and Maneuvering Clearances: Key Dimensions for ARE PA

Reach Ranges and Maneuvering Clearances Make or Break Accessible Design

Two of the most frequently tested ADA dimensional requirements on the ARE PA exam are reach ranges and door maneuvering clearances. These requirements ensure that wheelchair users and people with limited mobility can operate controls, fixtures, and doors independently. Getting these numbers right matters in schematic design, when deciding where to place controls, equipment, and doorways to ensure accessible reach and approach.

Reach Range Requirements (ADA Section 308)

Operable parts - light switches, electrical outlets, thermostats, elevator controls, and similar elements - must be within reach range for someone seated in a wheelchair:

For side reach over an obstruction: maximum height is 46 inches when the obstruction depth is 10–24 inches. The key numbers to memorize: 48 inches maximum, 15 inches minimum, for unobstructed reaches. When obstructions are present, the maximum drops to 44 or 46 inches.

Maneuvering Clearances at Doors (ADA Section 404)

Maneuvering clearances at doors allow wheelchair users to approach, open, and pass through doors independently. The required clearances vary based on the direction of approach (front approach, latch approach, hinge approach) and whether the door swings toward or away from the user:

  • Front approach, pull side: 18 inches on the latch side, 60 inches in depth from the door.
  • Front approach, push side: 12 inches on the latch side if door has both a closer and latch; 0 inches if door has neither.
  • Hinge approach, pull side: 36 inches on latch side, 60 inches depth.
  • Latch approach, pull side: 24 inches on latch side, 54 inches depth.

The most important practical implication: when a door swings toward the user (pull side), more clear floor space is needed on the latch side so the user can pull the door open while moving their wheelchair clear of the door swing. Doors in alcoves or tight corridors often fail this requirement.

Operable Parts

All operable parts on accessible routes must be operable with one hand and not require tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist. They must require no more than 5 pounds of force to operate. Round knobs do not comply; lever handles, push buttons, and rocker switches do comply. Elevator call buttons, emergency call buttons, and door openers must meet the reach range and operable part requirements.

  • Reach range: 15 to 48 inches above floor (unobstructed); drops to 44 inches with obstruction.
  • Front approach pull side: 18 inches clear on latch side, 60 inches depth.
  • Operable parts: one-hand operation, no pinching/twisting, 5 lbs max force.
  • Round knobs do not comply with ADA operable part requirements.
