Construction Drawings Are an Integrated System - Every Sheet Type Plays a Specific Role
A complete construction document set is not a collection of individual drawings - it is an integrated system in which each drawing type communicates specific information and references other drawings for additional information. Floor plans show the layout; sections show how the building is cut vertically; elevations show the exterior face; detail drawings show the connection between components at large scale; and schedules organize information that would clutter the drawings if shown graphically. When this system works correctly, a contractor can find every piece of information they need to build every element of the building by navigating the drawing set systematically. When it does not work - when information is missing, conflicting, or hard to find - the result is field confusion, RFIs, and change orders. Floor Plans
The floor plan is a horizontal section cut through the building at approximately 4 feet above the floor level, showing the layout of walls, doors, windows, and fixed elements. Floor plans are the foundational drawing on which most other drawings are based. Floor plans must coordinate with: the structural drawings (column grid and member locations); the reflected ceiling plan (which ceiling system, light fixtures, and HVAC diffusers are in each space); the finish plan or finish schedule (which flooring, base, and wall finishes apply in each space); and the equipment plan (where fixed equipment is located).
Sections and Elevations
Building sections cut through the building vertically to show floor-to-floor relationships, structural depth, ceiling heights, and the character of spaces in cross-section. Interior elevations show the face of a room's walls as seen from inside - often including casework, millwork, openings, and finish patterns. Exterior elevations show the face of the building as seen from outside - material designations, window patterns, and dimensions of major features. All sections and elevations must be keyed to their source plans through reference marks (bubble keys showing the section cut line on the plan and the detail or elevation number).
Detail Drawings
Detail drawings show specific building conditions at large scale (3" = 1'-0", 1-1/2" = 1'-0", or larger) to communicate how materials connect, how assemblies are built up, and how transitions between systems are resolved. Common details: wall assembly sections (showing all layers from exterior to interior), window head/sill/jamb details, floor edge details, expansion joint details, and typical condition details (typical interior partition, typical exterior connection). Details are called out on plans, sections, and elevations by detail bubbles referencing the detail number and drawing sheet.
Schedules
Schedules organize information that is too data-intensive to show graphically: the door schedule (door number, size, frame type, hardware, fire rating for every door); the window schedule (type, size, glazing specification, U-value, SHGC for each window type); the room finish schedule (floor, base, wall, and ceiling finishes for every room); the hardware schedule (each hardware group's components and specifications); and the equipment schedule. Schedules are coordinated with the drawings through key marks that connect the scheduled item to its location.
