The RCP Is the Single Document Where Architectural Ceiling Design Meets Every Building System
The reflected ceiling plan (RCP) is one of the most coordination-intensive sheets in any construction document set. In plan view, looking upward as if the floor were a mirror reflecting the ceiling, the RCP shows everything that is visible at ceiling level: tile grid or drywall ceiling surfaces, light fixture locations and types, HVAC supply and return diffusers and grilles, sprinkler heads, exit and emergency lighting, smoke detector locations, speakers and other AV devices, ceiling-mounted signage, and any soffits, cloud ceilings, or ceiling-height changes. Because all of these elements must fit in the same overhead plane - above the finished ceiling surface and below the structure - the RCP is simultaneously an architectural design drawing and the primary coordination document for architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and technology systems.
What Goes on the RCP
Ceiling surfaces and materials: Ceiling tile grid layout (typically 2x2 or 2x4 module, aligned to column grid or room centerlines); drywall ceiling areas with level and material noted; wood or metal panel ceilings; ceiling height changes (annotated or shown with elevation callouts). Light fixtures: Symbols for each luminaire type with a keyed legend (type A, B, C, etc.); switching group designations. HVAC diffusers and grilles: Supply air diffusers, return air grilles, exhaust grilles; typically shown as symbols with mechanical engineering coordination; exact locations may be set by the mechanical engineer on their coordination drawings. Sprinkler heads: In buildings with fire suppression, sprinkler head locations are shown on the RCP - typically by the fire protection contractor or engineer, coordinated with the ceiling grid. Exit and emergency lighting: Emergency egress lighting fixtures, exit signs (whether ceiling-mounted or wall-mounted at door heads). Special ceiling elements: Access panels, soffits, coves, crown molding, ceiling-mounted speakers, projectors, smoke detectors.
RCP Coordination Responsibilities
The architect produces the base RCP with ceiling design, light fixture locations, and architectural elements. The engineer of record for each discipline provides overlay information (mechanical diffusers, sprinkler heads, electrical devices) that must be coordinated in the plenum space with structure and with each other. The architect is responsible for ensuring that all elements fit in the available plenum depth, that ceiling heights are achievable given structural spans and mechanical duct routing, and that light fixtures and diffusers align with ceiling tile grids. On projects using BIM (Building Information Modeling), the RCP is generated from the 3D ceiling plane and coordination is performed through clash detection in the BIM model.
