Knowing the STC Target Isn't Enough - You Need to Know Which Assemblies Achieve It
Building acoustics requires two kinds of knowledge: (1) what STC and IIC ratings are required for a given application (the code and performance standard), and (2) which wall and floor-ceiling assemblies actually achieve those ratings (the construction system knowledge). An architect who knows IBC requires STC 50 between residential dwelling units but doesn't know how to specify an assembly that achieves STC 50 cannot design a building that meets the requirement. The gap between STC 50 specification and STC 50 field performance is also real - assembly ratings are measured in laboratory conditions with airtight junctions and careful workmanship; field conditions (penetrations, outlet boxes, flanking paths through structure) can reduce field STC values by 5-10 points relative to the laboratory rating. Understanding this gap and specifying accordingly is part of the acoustic design skill the ARE PPD and PDD exams test.
Mass-Spring-Mass Principle
High-performance acoustic assemblies use the mass-spring-mass principle: two massive layers (wall faces or floor/ceiling surfaces) separated by a resilient air gap or spring element that decouples the two layers. Sound pressure drives the outer layer into vibration; the spring (air gap or resilient mount) attenuates the vibration before it reaches the inner layer; the inner massive layer re-radiates less sound into the adjacent space. Adding mass to a single-layer wall increases STC by approximately 5 points per doubling of mass. Decoupling the two layers provides dramatically higher STC improvement for the same mass investment.
Wall Assembly Types and STC Values
Single stud wall, 5/8 GWB both sides, batt insulation: STC 45-50 (standard). Staggered stud wall: GWB on both faces mounted on alternate studs in the same plate track; air gap decouples the two faces: STC 52-58. Double stud wall: Two separate stud rows on separate plates; air gap 1-2 inches; GWB both faces, batt insulation: STC 58-68 depending on air gap and mass. Resilient channel (RC-1 or IsoMax): GWB on one face mounted on resilient metal hat channels that flex under vibration rather than transmitting it rigidly; STC 48-55; resilient channel is effective only if properly installed (no "short-circuiting" connections between the GWB and the stud).
Floor-Ceiling Assemblies and IIC
IIC (Impact Isolation Class) measures resistance to impact sound (footsteps, dropped objects transmitted through the structure). Achieving IIC 50 in concrete construction: lightweight concrete structural slab over resilient mat over topping; IIC 50-55 typical. In wood frame residential construction: engineered wood floor system + resilient mat + flooring; IIC 50 typically requires significant resilient underlayment. Floor coverings matter: carpet (with pad) can provide IIC 50 even over a lightweight structural slab; hard flooring (wood, tile) provides essentially no impact isolation without resilient underlayment.
