The Wait After an ARE Exam Is Real - Here Is What to Expect and How to Use the Results

After taking an ARE division, most candidates experience a period of uncertainty before receiving their score. Understanding what the score release process looks like, what the pass/fail determination means, and how to use score information (particularly for failing results) is part of navigating the ARE process intelligently. The anxiety of the waiting period is real and universal among ARE candidates - but having accurate expectations about timing and about what the score report actually communicates makes the experience manageable and productive rather than paralyzing.

Score Release Timing

ARE 5.0 scores are typically released within 3-5 business days of taking the exam, delivered electronically through the NCARB Record. Scores for exams taken late in a testing window (near the end of the month) may take slightly longer due to processing volume. There is no immediate score report at the testing center - candidates leave without knowing their result, which is one of the more stressful aspects of the exam experience. NCARB sends a notification email when scores are available in the record; the score appears in the ARE Divisions section of the NCARB Record portal.

Pass/Fail Determination

ARE 5.0 scores are reported as "Pass" or "Fail" - there is no numerical score reported to candidates. This is by design: the ARE is a criterion-referenced exam, meaning the pass/fail determination is based on whether the candidate has demonstrated the required level of competency, not on how they performed relative to other test-takers. NCARB periodically recalibrates the passing standard through a process called "standard setting" that involves licensed architects reviewing exam content and establishing the minimum level of competency required for safe independent practice.

Score Report for Failing Candidates

Candidates who do not pass receive a score report with performance information by content area - showing whether they performed above, at, or below the competency threshold in each area. This content area breakdown is the most valuable information in the failing score report and should be the primary input to retake preparation planning. After reviewing the score report: identify which content areas fell below the threshold; estimate the weight of those areas in the overall exam; and plan a preparation strategy that focuses retake study on the identified weak areas.

What a Pass Means

A passing score means you have demonstrated competency on that division - NCARB records the passing status in your NCARB Record, and the score is valid for 5 years from the date of passing (subject to the rolling clock policy). There is no benefit to retaking a passed division to try to "improve" your score - it is a pass/fail system, and a passing score fulfills the requirement regardless of how comfortably you passed.
