A Good Flashcard System Is the Infrastructure That Makes Active Recall Sustainable Over Months of Study
Active recall - testing yourself rather than passively re-reading - is the most effective study method for professional exams. Flashcards are the most practical and flexible implementation of active recall for the ARE, because they allow you to carry your study material in a phone, run through cards during commutes or lunch, and focus each study session on exactly the content you know least well. But not all flashcards are created equal. A flashcard with a bad question on the front and a vague answer on the back teaches you nothing; a flashcard with a precise question that tests a specific fact or concept, with a complete and accurate answer, is a powerful study tool. Building a good flashcard system requires thinking carefully about what information to capture and how to frame it so that reviewing the card actually tests your knowledge.
What to Capture on Cards
Definitions: Front: "What is the difference between a fire wall and a fire barrier?" Back: "Fire wall divides building into separate buildings; structurally independent; 3-hr minimum. Fire barrier divides fire areas within a building; not structurally independent; 1-3 hr." Code numbers: Front: "What is the minimum STC rating for walls between residential dwelling units? (IBC)" Back: "STC 50." Formulas: Front: "What is the formula for Cost Performance Index (CPI) in earned value management?" Back: "CPI = EV / AC (Earned Value divided by Actual Cost). CPI < 1.0 = over budget." Sequences: Front: "What is the correct sequence of RFI → Change Order steps when contractor identifies a design deficiency?" Back: [sequence in order]. Visual concepts: If your flashcard app supports images, add a diagram of the concept - ADA restroom plan dimensions, structural system diagrams, curtain wall section details.
How to Write Clear Questions
The question on the front of the card should be specific and unambiguous - one clear fact or concept being tested. Avoid cards that are too broad ("Explain LEED" produces a different answer every time you review it - that ambiguity makes the card useless for self-testing). Avoid cards that test too many facts at once. One specific question → one specific answer. If you want to test multiple related facts, make multiple cards. The more specific and testable the question, the more effectively the card trains retrieval.
Organization
Organize cards by ARE division (PcM, PjM, PA, PPD, PDD, CE) and by topic within division. In Anki, use decks and subdecks. In physical cards, use dividers. Keeping division-specific cards separate allows you to study a specific division intensively, then rotate to another, without mixing cards from different domains in the same review session.
