No Single Study Tool Covers Everything - But the Right Combination Is Powerful
Walk into any ARE candidate's apartment and you will likely find a combination of study materials: a well-worn practice question book with highlighted passages, a laptop with six tabs open to different study platforms, maybe a printed copy of AIA A201 with sticky notes on every other page. The ARE is broad enough and difficult enough that most candidates benefit from multiple study resources targeting the same content from different angles. The challenge is not finding study tools - there are plenty - but choosing the combination that fits your learning style, your schedule, and your budget without creating so much complexity that managing the tools becomes its own project.
Practice Question Banks
Practice questions are the most important study resource for the ARE, and no other resource type comes close. The ARE uses multiple-choice and alternate item type (AIT) questions that require applying knowledge, not just recalling it. The only way to develop the skill of applying knowledge under time pressure is to practice doing it repeatedly, review your wrong answers carefully, and understand why the correct answer is correct and why the distractors are wrong. A high-quality practice question bank should offer questions that are accurate to the current ARE 5.0 content and difficulty level, detailed rationale explanations for both correct and incorrect answers, and filtering by topic so you can target weak areas.
How many practice questions do you need? There is no universal answer, but most candidates who pass their first attempt report doing between 300 and 600 practice questions per division. More important than the total number is how you use them: reviewing every wrong answer carefully and understanding the concept behind it is worth three times as much as simply clicking through questions to accumulate repetitions.
Flashcard Platforms
Flashcards are most valuable for the definitional and procedural content that underpins the application questions: what AIA document numbers correspond to which contracts, what the IBC says about egress, what ASHRAE 62.1 ventilation rates are, how the AIA payment process works step by step. Physical flash cards work well for some learners; digital spaced repetition platforms (Anki, AREprep's built-in flashcard system) are more efficient because they handle the review scheduling automatically. The key is using flashcards actively - cover the answer, try to recall, then check - rather than passively flipping through and telling yourself you know something because you recognize it when you see it.
Study Guides and Reference Books
Comprehensive study guides (including the NCARB practice exams and various third-party guides) provide structured coverage of the content areas for each division. They are most valuable early in your preparation to give you the conceptual framework and vocabulary you need to understand practice questions when you encounter them. Reading a study guide without doing practice questions is insufficient preparation, but practice questions without any conceptual framework are also inefficient - you spend too much time looking up explanations for concepts you have not encountered in any organized way.
Video Courses
Video lectures can be valuable for visual learners and for complex topics that benefit from seeing someone work through a problem step by step - structural load calculations, for example, or HVAC system schematics. The risk of video courses is passive learning: it is easy to watch hours of content and feel productive while retaining relatively little because you are not actively engaging with the material. Videos are most valuable when you pause to test yourself on each concept, take notes rather than just watching, and then immediately do practice questions on what you just learned.
