Architects Think Visually - Your ARE Study System Should Match How Your Brain Works
One of the underused advantages architecture students and practitioners bring to ARE preparation is a highly developed visual-spatial intelligence. Years of drawing, sketching, and thinking through design problems in three dimensions create a mode of thinking that retains visual information more effectively than text alone. Yet most ARE study resources present content primarily in text and table form - which is fine for some content but inefficient for the type of spatial, systemic, and relational content that architectural practice involves. Using visual learning strategies - concept sketches, hand-drawn diagrams, spatial memory maps - to encode and retain technical content can dramatically improve retention for candidates who learn better through visual-spatial representation than through text lists and definitions. The challenge is making the effort to create these visual representations rather than defaulting to passive reading of text content.
Concept Sketches
Many ARE content areas are inherently spatial and benefit from being represented as rough sketches. For egress calculations: draw a flowchart showing the sequence of steps from occupant load to exit count to width to travel distance. These visual representations create memory hooks that help retrieve the information under exam conditions where text descriptions alone may not trigger recall.
Comparison Charts
When the ARE exam tests the comparison between two or more similar things (fire wall vs. fire barrier vs. fire partition; platform frame vs. balloon frame; VAV vs. VRF vs. radiant; DBB vs. DB vs. CMR), a visual comparison chart is far easier to retain than separate paragraphs about each option. Draw a two- or three-column table by hand: one row for each comparison attribute, one column for each option being compared. The visual scanning pattern of a hand-drawn comparison table creates a mental image of the differences that is easier to retrieve than text descriptions of each option read separately.
