Architecture License Is Not Just Earned Once - It Must Be Actively Maintained
A state architecture license must be renewed periodically - most states require renewal every one to two years - and renewal requires demonstration that the architect has completed a minimum number of continuing education hours during the renewal period. The purpose of continuing education requirements is to ensure that licensed architects keep their knowledge current as codes update, technology evolves, materials improve, and best practices change. The ARE PcM exam tests continuing education requirements because they are part of the professional responsibility framework that governs licensed architectural practice. Understanding what is required and how to meet those requirements is basic professional literacy for a practicing architect.
AIA Continuing Education Requirements
The American Institute of Architects requires its members to complete 18 hours of continuing education per year. Of those 18 hours, 12 must be in Learning Units designated as health, safety, and welfare (HSW) topics. HSW topics are those that directly relate to the protection of the public - life safety, accessibility, structural integrity, fire protection, building envelope performance, environmental sustainability, and similar topics. The remaining 6 hours may be in any architecture-related subject, including business development, project management, design theory, and leadership. AIA members self-report their continuing education completion in their AIA member profile, and AIA conducts random audits to verify reported completions.
State License Renewal Requirements
State license renewal continuing education requirements are separate from and in addition to AIA membership requirements. Each state licensing board sets its own renewal requirements, and these vary considerably. Most states require between 12 and 24 hours of continuing education per renewal cycle. The majority of states require that all or a substantial portion of CE hours be in HSW topics. Some states have specific topic requirements - California requires at least one hour of disability access compliance training per renewal; some states require training in ethics or business practices. Architects practicing in multiple states must comply with the CE requirements of each state, which can mean completing different courses or different numbers of hours for different renewals.
AIA CES Provider System
AIA's Continuing Education System (CES) is a quality-approved provider network that vetted course providers use to offer CE credit that AIA recognizes. Courses offered through AIA CES providers are reviewed for accuracy, objectivity, and HSW applicability. Courses available through AIA CES include in-person seminars, conference sessions, online courses, manufacturer-sponsored product demonstrations, and webinars. When a provider is an AIA/CES provider, their designated HSW courses count toward AIA's 12-hour HSW requirement. Many state boards also accept AIA/CES courses toward their renewal requirements, but architects should verify their state's specific acceptance criteria.
Ethics Obligations in Continuing Practice
The AIA Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct establishes ongoing obligations for AIA members that are separate from and complement CE requirements. The Code requires members to maintain their competence through appropriate continuing education, to uphold the highest standards of professional integrity, and to recognize and act on professional obligations to clients, the public, and the profession. Violation of the Code can result in AIA membership sanctions including reprimand, suspension, or termination of membership. State boards also have professional conduct rules - violations of those rules can result in license discipline including license suspension or revocation, which is a far more serious consequence than AIA membership sanctions.
