IBC Corridor Width Requirements: Minimum Dimensions for ARE PA

Corridor Width Is Both a Minimum and an Egress Capacity Requirement

IBC corridor width requirements are commonly misunderstood because there are two separate sets of requirements that both apply: minimum absolute widths (regardless of occupant load) and egress capacity widths (based on the number of occupants the corridor must serve). The correct width is the larger of the two calculations. The ARE PA exam regularly tests corridor width in the context of egress design, exit access planning, and ADA accessibility coordination.

IBC Minimum Corridor Widths

IBC Section 1020.2 establishes minimum corridor widths that apply regardless of occupant load:

Egress Capacity Width Calculation

In addition to the minimum widths above, corridors must be wide enough to serve their occupant load. IBC Section 1005.1 establishes width factors: 0.15 inches per occupant for corridors and other egress components (other than stairways). A corridor serving 300 occupants requires a minimum width of 300 × 0.15 = 45 inches. Since this exceeds the 44-inch minimum, 45 inches governs.

Always calculate both: (1) minimum width per Table 1020.2, and (2) egress capacity width per Section 1005.1. Use the larger value.

Corridor Construction Requirements

IBC Table 1020.1 specifies fire resistance rating requirements for corridor walls based on occupancy and sprinkler status. Most corridors in sprinklered office buildings (Group B) require 0-hour rating. Corridors in institutional occupancies (I-1, I-2, I-3) typically require 1-hour fire resistance rating. The rating requirement ensures that corridor walls provide a degree of separation between the corridor and the occupied spaces on either side.

Clear Width vs. Nominal Width

IBC corridor widths are measured as clear width - the actual clear dimension available for egress, not the nominal wall-to-wall dimension. Wall finishes, baseboards, handrails, and projections reduce clear width. A 4-foot-wide corridor (wall to wall) with 2-inch wall finishes on each side and handrails projecting 4 inches on each side provides clear width of 48 - 4 - 4 - 4 = 36 inches. Careful detailing is required to maintain code-compliant clear widths in narrow corridors.

ADA Corridor Width

The ADA Standards for Accessible Design require a minimum of 36 inches of clear width for accessible routes, with 44 inches or wider preferred when passing space between wheelchair users is needed. In practice, IBC minimum corridor widths (44 inches for most occupancies) exceed the ADA minimum, so the IBC typically governs corridor width. However, ADA requirements for turning clearances and passing spaces at intersections add considerations beyond the simple corridor run.
