The means of egress - the system by which building occupants can safely travel from any point in a building to a public way - is one of the most fundamental life safety systems in the IBC. When a building catches fire, the occupants' ability to escape depends entirely on the design and construction of the means of egress: its capacity (wide enough for the occupant load), its fire resistance (protected enough to allow safe travel through smoke and flame), its travel distance (close enough to exits that occupants can reach them before conditions become untenable), and its continuity (a continuous path from occupied space to the outside). The IBC's means of egress requirements (Chapter 10) are tested extensively on the ARE PA exam and appear in the ARE PPD exam in the context of construction documents for egress systems.
Three Components of Means of Egress
IBC Section 1003 defines the means of egress as having three distinct components:
- Exit Access: The portion of the egress path that leads from the occupied space to the exit. Corridors, aisles, and spaces through which occupants travel to reach the exit are exit access. Exit access may pass through multiple rooms, open floor plates, and other occupied spaces, subject to limitations on travel distance and path complexity.
- Exit: The protected egress path - the fire-rated enclosure (exit stair, exit corridor, horizontal exit) that provides a protected path of travel to the exterior. Exits must be fire-rated enclosures that provide protection from fire during evacuation.
- Exit Discharge: The portion of the egress path between the exit and the public way - typically ground-floor lobby space between the stair door and the building's exterior door, or exterior walkways leading to the street.
Corridor Fire Ratings
The IBC sets corridor fire rating requirements based on occupancy and whether the building is sprinklered. In non-sprinklered buildings, corridors in most occupancies (B, E, M, R) must be rated assemblies - typically 1-hour construction (walls, doors, and ceiling). In sprinklered buildings, most occupancies (B, M) require only a 0-hour corridor (no rating required) because the sprinkler system provides the necessary protection. Institutional occupancies (I-2 hospitals, I-3 prisons) require 1-hour corridor construction regardless of sprinkler protection, because of the difficulty of evacuating non-ambulatory occupants.
Corridor Width
Minimum corridor width for exit access corridors: 44 inches for occupant loads over 50; 36 inches for occupant loads 50 or fewer. Additional width may be required based on occupant load calculations (0.2 inches per person for corridors based on sprinklered buildings; 0.2 inches per person in non-sprinklered buildings for horizontal travel). Accessible egress routes must be a minimum of 44 inches wide to accommodate wheelchairs and accessible means of egress features.
Dead-End Corridors
A dead-end corridor is a corridor that does not lead directly to an exit at both ends - it has a dead end where a person traveling in the wrong direction must turn around. The IBC limits dead-end corridors to protect occupants from becoming trapped at the dead end if the exit at the other end is blocked by fire or smoke. Maximum dead-end corridor length: 20 feet in most occupancies (sprinklered and non-sprinklered); some exceptions allow up to 50 feet in sprinklered buildings for Group B and S occupancies.
