The Feynman Technique for ARE Prep: Teach It to Learn It

If You Can Explain a Concept Clearly, You Understand It - If You Cannot, You Don't

Richard Feynman, the Nobel Prize-winning physicist, had a simple test for whether he truly understood something: could he explain it in plain language to someone with no background in the subject? If he could not, the gap in his explanation revealed a gap in his understanding. The same principle applies with tremendous force to ARE preparation. Many architecture candidates can recognize a correct answer on a flashcard but struggle when an exam question asks them to apply the concept to a novel situation - because recognition is not understanding. The Feynman Technique forces you to confront the difference between the two.

The Four Steps

The Feynman Technique has four steps, and the critical step is the third one. First, choose a concept you are studying - for example, the Construction Change Directive under AIA A201. Second, write down an explanation of it in simple language, as if you were explaining it to someone who has never studied architecture. Use concrete examples, not jargon. Third, and most importantly: identify where your explanation breaks down or becomes vague. Where do you find yourself reaching for technical language to cover a gap? Where do you write something that sounds reasonable but that you cannot actually explain if asked a follow-up question? Those gaps are your actual weak spots - the places where you have a surface familiarity with a concept but not genuine understanding. Fourth, go back to your study materials and fill those specific gaps, then try the explanation again.

The power of this technique is that writing an explanation is much harder than reading one. When you read a description of what a CCD is, your brain experiences a feeling of familiarity that can be mistaken for understanding. When you try to write your own explanation from memory, in plain language, without looking at notes, you discover very quickly that "the owner and architect sign it without the contractor" is about all you can actually articulate - which is not enough to answer a question about when a CCD is appropriate versus a change order, or how the contractor's compensation under a CCD is calculated.

Applying the Technique to ARE Content

The Feynman Technique is particularly valuable for ARE content areas that involve systems or processes - things where understanding the relationship between components matters more than memorizing a single fact. Good targets include: how a VAV HVAC system works from the AHU through the distribution network to the terminal boxes; how the AIA payment process works from schedule of values through pay application through certificate for payment through owner payment; how the IBC determines the required occupancy separation between two adjacent occupancy groups; and how project delivery methods differ in terms of who contracts with whom and when design is complete relative to when construction begins.

Spend 10 minutes writing out your explanation of one of these processes without looking at notes, then compare it to what you know to be accurate. The mismatch will be educational in a way that passive re-reading never is.

Using the Technique in Study Groups

Study groups are one of the best environments for Feynman-style learning because explaining to another person is more demanding than writing in a notebook. If you are in an ARE study group, take turns presenting concepts to each other without reference materials. The questions your fellow candidates ask will expose weaknesses in your explanation that you would not have noticed on your own. Teaching forces you to anticipate misunderstandings, choose better examples, and confront the areas where your knowledge is shallow.
