IBC Chapter 10 - Means of Egress - is the single most-tested code chapter on the ARE PA division. It governs how occupants evacuate a building in an emergency: how many exits are required, how wide they must be, how far occupants can travel to reach an exit, and what separates a compliant exit from a normal doorway. Mastering Chapter 10 is not optional for PA candidates - it appears in nearly every code analysis question.

Step 1: Calculate Occupant Load

The occupant load is the number of occupants for which egress must be designed. It is calculated by dividing the floor area (or the portion of floor area assigned to a specific use) by the occupant load factor from IBC Table 1004.5. The occupant load determines the number of exits required and the minimum egress width.

Example occupant load factors: Office space = 150 sf/person; Assembly (unconcentrated seating) = 15 sf/person; Assembly (concentrated, chairs only) = 7 sf/person; Retail = 60 sf/person; Mercantile, street floor = 30 sf/person.

Step 2: Determine Number of Exits Required

IBC Section 1006 specifies the minimum number of exits based on occupant load:

  • 1 exit: permitted for occupant loads of 49 or fewer (with exceptions and travel distance limits)
  • 2 exits: required for occupant loads of 50–499 (with exceptions for high-rise and certain occupancies)
  • 3 exits: required for occupant loads of 500–999
  • 4 exits: required for occupant loads of 1,000 or more

Single-exit exceptions: Certain occupancy types and small floor areas may be served by one exit, subject to strict travel distance and occupant load limits. These exceptions are occupancy-specific and should be verified in Table 1006.3.3.

Step 3: Verify Travel Distance

Travel distance is the length of the exit access path from the most remote point in a room or space to the entrance of an exit (stair enclosure, exterior door, or horizontal exit). Travel distance limits vary by occupancy and sprinkler status:

Step 4: Calculate Required Egress Width

Egress width is calculated based on the occupant load served by each exit, using IBC Section 1005 width factors: 0.2 inches per occupant for stairways; 0.15 inches per occupant for other egress components. Minimum widths also apply regardless of occupant load: 36 inches for corridors and doors (single occupant); 44 inches for corridors serving more than 50 occupants; 44 inches for stairways.
