Reflected Ceiling Plans: What They Show and How to Read Them for the ARE PDD

How reflected ceiling plans (RCPs) are produced, what information they communicate, coordination with MEP drawings, ceiling height notation, and how RCPs are tested on the ARE PDD exam.

A Reflected Ceiling Plan Shows the Ceiling as If Viewed in a Floor Mirror

The reflected ceiling plan (RCP) is a drawing view that shows what you would see if you placed a mirror on the floor and looked down at it - the ceiling plan is "reflected" down so that it can be read in the same orientation as the floor plan. North is still at the top of the sheet; walls appear in their correct locations; but instead of showing the floor level content, the RCP shows ceiling-level content: ceiling material and grid, light fixture locations, HVAC diffusers and grilles, fire sprinkler heads, smoke detectors, exit signs, and ceiling heights. RCPs are among the most heavily coordinated drawings in a construction documents set. The ARE PDD tests RCP production and reading as a core CD skill.

What a Reflected Ceiling Plan Shows

  • Ceiling type and height: Each ceiling region is labeled with ceiling material (ACT = acoustical ceiling tile, GWB = gypsum wallboard, OPEN = exposed structure) and height (e.g., "ACT, 9'-0" AFF"). Where ceiling heights change, the transition is clearly delineated.
  • Light fixture layout: All ceiling-mounted lighting - recessed cans, linear fixtures, surface-mounted fixtures, pendant drop locations - are shown with symbols matching the fixture schedule.
  • HVAC supply and return diffusers: Location of supply air diffusers and return air grilles, coordinated with the mechanical plan.
  • Fire sprinkler heads: Locations shown (often only approximately at CD stage, finalized by contractor's specialty drawings).
  • Life safety devices: Smoke detectors, emergency lighting, exit signs - coordinated with the fire alarm and electrical drawings.
  • Ceiling grid orientation: For ACT ceilings, the grid direction and starting point control tile layout - edge cuts should be symmetrical and no less than half a tile at perimeter walls.

Coordination with MEP Drawings

The RCP must coordinate closely with mechanical (HVAC diffuser locations), electrical (light fixture locations), plumbing (access panels for above-ceiling plumbing), and fire protection (sprinkler head locations) drawings. A typical coordination check verifies that: no light fixture conflicts with an HVAC duct or structural beam; all ceiling-mounted devices fit within the available ceiling grid; access panels to above-ceiling equipment are shown in correct locations.

Ceiling Plenum vs. Accessible Plenum

The space above a suspended ceiling is the ceiling plenum. When the plenum is used as a return air plenum (air returns through the plenum space rather than dedicated return ducts), only plenum-rated materials are permitted in that space. Cables, insulation, and other materials must be plenum-rated (low-smoke, low-flame). Non-plenum-rated materials must be in conduit or enclosed cavities.
