Ventilation Requirements Under ASHRAE 62.1: What the ARE PPD Tests

Adequate Ventilation Is a Code Requirement, Not Just Good Practice

ASHRAE Standard 62.1 - Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality - is the reference standard that most building codes adopt (directly or by reference) for minimum ventilation requirements in commercial buildings. Inadequate ventilation leads to indoor air quality problems including elevated CO2, accumulated pollutants, humidity buildup, and occupant health complaints. The ARE PPD tests ventilation requirements because architects must understand what ventilation rates their HVAC systems must provide and how ventilation requirements affect building system design.

The Ventilation Rate Procedure (VRP)

ASHRAE 62.1's primary compliance path is the Ventilation Rate Procedure. The VRP calculates minimum outdoor air (OA) requirements based on two components:

  • People component: Outdoor air per person (cfm/person), based on the design occupant density for the space. The people component addresses CO2 and bioeffluents from occupants.
  • Area component: Outdoor air per square foot of floor area (cfm/sf), regardless of occupant density. The area component addresses pollutants from building materials, furnishings, and cleaning products.

Total outdoor air requirement = (people component × design occupancy) + (area component × floor area)

System Ventilation Efficiency

In multi-zone recirculating systems (like VAV), not all outdoor air delivered to the system may actually reach every zone. ASHRAE 62.1 accounts for this through the system ventilation efficiency (Ev) calculation, which ensures that the zone with the highest outdoor air fraction still receives its minimum required outdoor air even when system air is recirculated. This is why VAV systems require minimum airflow setpoints at each VAV box - to ensure minimum ventilation is maintained even when the zone is at low load.

IAQ Procedure

An alternative to the VRP is the Indoor Air Quality Procedure, which allows a designer to demonstrate acceptable IAQ through direct measurement of pollutant concentrations rather than prescriptive outdoor air rates. This approach is more complex and requires ongoing monitoring but can be more cost-effective in some applications.

Ventilation and Energy

More outdoor air = more energy consumed (heating and cooling unconditioned outside air is expensive). Energy recovery ventilation (ERV) transfers heat and moisture between exhaust and supply airstreams, recovering up to 70–80% of the energy that would otherwise be lost to outdoor air ventilation. ERV is commonly used in well-insulated, tight buildings where ventilation represents a significant portion of the total HVAC load.
