Project Development & Documentation tests your ability to produce construction documents, write specifications, select materials, and coordinate building systems. Unlike divisions that test conceptual understanding, PDD tests execution-level knowledge - the details that make buildings buildable.
Mistake #1: Confusing Specification Types
CSI specification types are heavily tested:
- Prescriptive specifications: Describe exact materials, products, and installation methods. The architect takes more responsibility for performance.
- Performance specifications: Describe required outcomes and let the contractor choose the means. The contractor takes more responsibility.
- Proprietary specifications: Name a specific product. Least flexible but ensures exact compliance. Must include "or equal" language in public projects.
- Reference standard specifications: Cite industry standards (ASTM, ANSI). Efficient but require the architect to verify the standard is current.

Mistake #5: Detailing Without Understanding Assembly Sequence
Construction details must be buildable. The ARE tests whether you understand the order of assembly - what goes in first, how layers connect, where flashing integrates, and where tolerances are needed. A detail that looks correct on paper but can't be built in sequence is wrong.
