ARE PjM Exam Day - What to Expect at the Testing Center
Project Management is one of the most calculation-heavy ARE divisions, with earned value analysis, scheduling logic, and consultant coordination scenarios. Knowing the testing center routine lets you focus entirely on the content. Here is what to expect when you sit for ARE PjM.
What to Bring
- Two forms of valid, unexpired identification. Your primary ID must be government-issued with a photo and signature (driver's license or passport). The name must match your NCARB record exactly.
- Your confirmation email or appointment number for faster check-in.
- Nothing else. All personal items are locked away. Prometric provides scratch paper or a dry-erase board and marker - essential for PjM calculations.
Prometric Testing Center Procedures
Arrive at least 30 minutes early. Check-in includes presenting IDs, a digital signature, a photo, and a palm-vein scan. You will be escorted to your assigned workstation in a monitored testing room. The proctor will launch your exam and confirm you can see the screen correctly before stepping away.
Timing and Pacing Strategy for PjM
PjM provides 3 hours and 20 minutes (200 minutes) for approximately 75 questions. The average is about 2 minutes 40 seconds per question, but PjM has a wide variance in question difficulty.

- Multiple choice (single answer): Covers consultant coordination, project scheduling concepts, and quality control procedures.
- Check-all-that-apply: May ask you to identify all responsibilities of the architect during a particular phase or all items in a project work plan.
- Drag-and-drop: Common for sequencing tasks on a schedule or matching earned value terms to their definitions.
- Case studies: PjM case studies frequently involve reading a project schedule, identifying the critical path, and answering questions about float, resource allocation, or delay impacts. Expect 2–3 case study sets.
- Hot spot: You may need to click on a specific task in a Gantt chart or identify a milestone on a project timeline.

On-Screen Calculator and Reference Tools
The on-screen calculator is critical for PjM. Practice earned value formulas using a basic calculator - the Prometric calculator does not have memory functions or advanced features. Write key formulas (CPI = EV/AC, SPI = EV/PV, EAC = BAC/CPI) on your scratch paper at the start of the exam before you begin answering questions. When to Skip and Flag Questions
If a calculation question has you stuck after 3 minutes, enter your best guess, flag it, and return later. Many PjM questions are conceptual and can be answered quickly, freeing time for harder calculations. Never leave a question blank - there is no penalty for guessing. The flag-and-return strategy works especially well for PjM because a fresh look at a tricky calculation often reveals an error you missed.
Managing Stress and Fatigue
Calculation fatigue is real in PjM. After several earned value or scheduling problems in a row, your accuracy drops. When you notice yourself re-reading the same numbers, pause for 10 seconds and refocus. Break Strategy
The exam clock runs during breaks, so keep them brief. A short break around question 35–40 helps reset calculation fatigue. Use the restroom before the exam starts. When you return from a break, you will re-scan your palm vein and be escorted back to your workstation.
What Happens After the Exam
After submitting your exam, you will complete a brief survey and then see a provisional pass/fail result on screen. The official score report appears on your NCARB Record within a few business days.
