Common ARE PPD Mistakes - What Trips Up Most Candidates

Avoid these common mistakes on the ARE 5.0 Project Planning & Design exam. Structural, envelope, and MEP pitfalls explained.

Why PPD Has the Widest Scope

Project Planning & Design covers structural systems, building envelope, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire protection, accessibility, and egress - all in one exam. The breadth is what makes it difficult. Candidates who master structural systems still fail because they neglected fire protection or HVAC.

Mistake #1: Confusing Structural System Characteristics

The ARE tests your ability to select the right structural system for a given scenario. Common confusions:

  • Steel moment frames resist lateral loads through rigid beam-column connections. They allow open floor plans but are expensive.
  • Braced frames use diagonal members for lateral resistance. More economical than moment frames but restrict openings.
  • Concrete shear walls are very stiff and efficient for lateral loads but must be planned early because they can't be easily modified.
  • Wood light frame is limited to low-rise construction and relies on sheathing as a diaphragm for lateral loads.

Mistake #2: Wrong Vapor Barrier Placement

This is one of the most missed topics on PPD. The vapor barrier goes on the warm side of the wall assembly:

  • Cold climates (heating-dominated): Vapor barrier on the interior (warm-in-winter) side.
  • Hot-humid climates (cooling-dominated): Vapor barrier on the exterior (warm) side.
  • Mixed climates: Use a "smart" vapor retarder or design the assembly to dry in both directions.

The vapor barrier is NOT the same as the air barrier. An air barrier stops air movement; a vapor barrier stops moisture diffusion. They can be the same material, but they serve different functions.

Mistake #3: Misapplying Fire-Resistance Requirements

  • A fire wall (2-4 hour rating) creates separate buildings for code purposes. It extends from foundation to roof.
  • A fire barrier (1-2 hour rating) separates occupancies or creates fire areas within a building.
  • A fire partition (1 hour rating) separates dwelling units, guest rooms, and corridor walls.
  • A smoke barrier (1 hour rating) restricts smoke movement but is not the same as a fire barrier.

Mistake #4: Oversimplifying HVAC Selection

Candidates pick HVAC systems based on building size alone. The ARE tests system selection based on multiple factors: zone control needs, humidity, noise, space requirements, and energy efficiency. A VAV (Variable Air Volume) system is not always the right answer.

Mistake #5: Egress Calculation Errors

Exit width, travel distance, common path of travel, and dead-end limits are all tested. The most common error is using the wrong occupant load factor (see PA mistakes) and then calculating exit width incorrectly.
