PPD Exam Overview
Project Planning & Design is widely considered the hardest ARE division because of its enormous scope. It covers structural systems, building envelope, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire protection, accessibility, and egress - all in one exam with approximately 75 questions and a 3 hour 20 minute time limit.
What to Study First
- Structural Systems - Know the characteristics, spans, and applications of steel, concrete, wood, and masonry systems. This is the most heavily tested topic.
- Building Envelope - Vapor barriers, air barriers, thermal performance, moisture management, and wall assembly design by climate zone.
- Fire Protection - Fire-resistance ratings, fire separation types, sprinkler systems, and how they affect height/area calculations.
- Egress - Occupant load, exit width, travel distance, common path, dead ends, exit separation.
- MEP Systems - HVAC system types, plumbing basics, electrical distribution, and lighting.
Systems Selection Questions
PPD's hardest questions ask you to select the best system for a scenario. Use this framework:
- What are the constraints? (Span, height, fire rating, budget, site conditions)
- What are the priorities? (Cost, speed, flexibility, aesthetics, sustainability)
- Which system fits best? (Eliminate systems that can't meet the constraints, then rank by priorities)
Never pick a system based on one factor alone. The ARE tests multi-factor decision-making.
The Envelope Section
Building envelope questions are second only to structural in frequency. Know these cold:
- Vapor barrier placement by climate zone (warm side of assembly)
- Air barrier continuity requirements
- Drainage plane and flashing integration
- Thermal bridging at structural penetrations
- R-value vs. U-factor (U = 1/R for total assembly)

Time Strategy for PPD
PPD questions often require more thought than other divisions because they involve system selection and integration. Budget your time accordingly:
- Quick concept questions: 1-2 minutes
- System selection questions: 3-4 minutes
- Calculation questions: 4-5 minutes
- Leave at least 30 minutes for review
