Fire Protection on the ARE

Fire protection concepts appear across PPD and PDD, testing your understanding of passive fire protection (fire-rated assemblies) and active fire protection (sprinklers, alarms, smoke control). The IBC Chapters 7 and 9 are the primary code references.

Fire-Resistance Ratings

Fire-resistance ratings, expressed in hours (1-hour, 2-hour, etc.), indicate how long an assembly can withstand a standard fire test (ASTM E119). Ratings apply to structural elements, walls, floor/ceiling assemblies, and shaft enclosures. The required rating depends on construction type (Types I–V) and the function of the assembly.

Opening Protectives

Openings in fire-rated assemblies must be protected by fire-rated doors, windows, or shutters. The opening protective rating is typically 75% of the wall rating (e.g., a 45-minute door in a 1-hour wall, a 90-minute door in a 2-hour fire barrier). Total area of openings is limited based on wall type and location.

Through-Penetration Firestopping

Any penetration through a fire-rated assembly (pipes, ducts, cables) must be firestopped to maintain the assembly's rating. Fire dampers are required where ducts penetrate fire barriers, and combination fire/smoke dampers where ducts penetrate smoke barriers.

Sprinkler Systems

Automatic sprinkler systems (NFPA 13) are the most effective active fire protection measure and are required by the IBC in certain occupancy types, high-rise buildings, and buildings exceeding specific area or height thresholds. Sprinkler installation triggers numerous code trade-offs:

  • Increased allowable building area (up to tripling with sprinklers)
  • Additional story allowance
  • Extended travel distances and dead-end corridors
  • Reduced fire-resistance rating requirements in some assemblies

Smoke Control

Smoke control systems use pressurization, exhaust, or airflow to limit smoke spread, typically required in high-rise buildings, atriums, underground structures, and smoke-protected assembly seating. Stairwell pressurization maintains a positive pressure differential to keep smoke out of exit stairways.
